Boston College Daily Links: Key For The Eagles Tonight Vs. N.C. State

Hoops

ACC Midweek Preview Part 2, Jan. 19 (ACC Sports Journal)
Key for the Eagles. Outside shooting. In both ACC games the Eagles won the score was in the 50s. That won’t be the case here. The Wolfpack has a good offense with a number of scoring options. The slow-paced Eagles don’t generate a lot of offensive possessions, so knocking down open jump shots is necessary in order to win this matchup.

ACC Freshman Watch Update, Jan. 18 (ACC Sports Journal)
Three Boston College freshmen make this week's ACC Freshman Watch Update Top 10 rankings because, well, we have quite a few of them.

"He does a spectacular job," Gottfried said. "They’re a young team but extremely dangerous because they have bought into everything that Steve is doing."

Questioning Win Homer's new star (Eagle in Atlanta)
I am suspicious of BC recruit Win Homer's bump from three star to four star on Rivals.com. Earlier this week, Rivals updated its Rivals 250 and the Virginia OL prospect debuted at 248. Previously Rivals gave Homer three stars, listed him as the 51st best tackle and the 12th best player out of Virginia. Even though he now has four stars plenty of players above him in his position ranking and in his state ranking still only carry three stars.

BC’s Luke Kuechly hard at work in next phase (The Boston Globe)
Kuechly is in a different world now. He has moved from college to the next level, with the NFL as the goal.

A Meet and Greet With the New Guys (Pre-Snap Read)
For a time, it seemed as if UMass would be the only team Boston College would beat all season. The Eagles got the better of the Minutemen in September, 45-17, after losing to Northwestern, U.C.F. and Duke to open the year and prior to dropping another trio of games in A.C.C. play.

Rumors of Boston University’s demise were greatly exaggerated (USCHO.com)
OK, folks, raise your hand if you began writing off Boston University right around Christmas Day. C’mon, be honest with yourself. You there in the back, get that hand up!

For some reason

I am super excited to see if we can get the win tonight… After the early losses in the season I was predicting we would go 2-14 in ACC play, and although both our wins so far need to be taken with a grain of salt, if we can sneak out a win tonight on the road with our next game being wake at conte… i’ll be all but ready to hop fully aboard the stevey d train.

I’m wondering what everyone thinks would be enough to deem this year a success at this point. Obviously a few weeks ago we would all have loved to get even a couple wins in ACC play, but now that we’ve started 2-1 what do people expect out of this team? To me finishing 5-11 in conference would be enough to have me really looking forward to next season

Curious: why should both of BC’s wins be taken with a grain of salt? The Don shouldn’t have to apologize for beating either Clemson or Virginia Tech.

Obviously a win is a win, but I see bloomsday’s point. Both wins were at home. Each was a very narrow two-point win. And most of all, Clemson and VT are weak opponents. They are a combined 1-6 in the ACC (1-4 if you choose not to count their losses to BC). Clemson has also lost to College of Charleston, Coastal Carolina, UTEP, and Hawaii.

A win is a win. No need to caveat each win, make excuses or otherwise apologize.

ACC basketball is down. No question. And Clemson and Virginia Tech probably won’t end up in the upper tier of the conference this year. So what?

For a program that some (most?) had pegged at 0-16 — the worst ACC program in conference history — we should enjoy having this team at 2-1. Save the “grains of salt,” excuses and apologies for our football program.

i agree entirely with the win is a win

i speaking more along the lines of our 2-1 obviously being a lot different than unc’s also being 2-1, the grain of salt i meant is maintaining a skepticism towards the belief that our having a winning acc record now is in some way indicative of the final success we will have. This is obvious given the weaknesses that were apparent in both games and the two teams we won against.

that being said, absolutely, any game that we have won or win from here on out is something we should be proud of given our teams inexperience and lack of premier talent. Like you said, there was a lot of winless projections going into acc play and now that we’ve started 2-1 I would say that basically, given the bleak projections, this team has already exceeded expectations.

So… given all that, I’m wondering what would be deemed a successful finish to these remaining 13 games now that we have seen the possibility of winning games this year? IMO picking up three more victories and seeing one of them on the road would be enough to get me excited for next year. I’m excited for this game tonight because it should be a good barometer of judging how “fluky” those last two wins were

Gotcha.

It’s just the whole “grain of salt” thing bothers me because you know, if it was the other way around and Virginia Tech or Clemson won, or both, you know excuse machine Seth Greenberg or Brad Brownell aren’t going to say:

“Yeah, we’re 2-1 in ACC play but one of those wins came over a BC team that plays 9 freshmen.”

I also don’t think tonight’s game will be an indication of how “fluky” the two wins were. N.C. State is probably an upper tier ACC program this year and we’re on the road. Playing in the second largest venue most of these guys have ever played in. Not expecting a win, just want to see some individual progress from the players (more made FTs, less turnovers, better offensive sets, etc.).

With the monkey off the back, so to speak, with 2 ACC wins, I think whether the rest of the season is a success can now be measured less on Ws and Ls and more on individual improvement and watching this team play more like a team.

The only reason the Ws were important was so that BC didn’t have the dubious honor of becoming the first ACC program to go 0-16.

That said, I think if BC wins 2-3 more games the rest of the year, I will be pretty happy. Hopefully one of those games is a road game because as CSOM_97 pointed out in the other thread, BC has just 1 win in road/neutral games (an OT win over UC-Riverside, a program that’s been playing D-IA for ~10 years).

Three wins gets them to double digit victories on the year, which isn’t all that great, but after the terrible start, I’ll certainly take it.
