Dan Persa "Questionable" For Season Opener Vs. Boston College
And the Pat Fitzgerald Jedi mind tricks continue.
Northwestern typically releases its weekly report and depth chart on Thursdays at 2pm. At 6 today, the program published a release that said quarterback Dan Persa is questionable. So what does this actually mean? Let's ask the Sippin' On Purple crew:
"I HAVE NO CLUE. I HAVE NO CLUE. I don't know if it means he's actually questionable, if this is all some sick joke from the NU medical staff, if anything means anything or if our lives are just a pathetic search for meaning in a world without one."
Oh, well, OK then.
When asked about whether Persa will play this weekend, coach Pat Fitzgerald continues to be coy with the media:
"If he's ready to go, he'll start. If he's not, he won't. He keeps improving every day. ... We'll see how things go and progress throughout the course of the week. Like I said, I think, 1,000,432 times, he's a guy that's going to do everything he can in his power to get healthy and get ready to play."
Thanks for the clarification, Fitz. Must have missed your 1,000,431st statement on the status of Persa earlier this week.
In actual Northwestern injury news, DT Brian Arnfelt (foot), DB Mike Bolden (leg), S Jared Carpenter (wrist), LB Collin Ellis (hand), LB Roderick Goodlow (leg) and WR Tony Jones (leg) are all out for Saturday's game. But before you go getting your hopes up, note that of those seven players, only one -- backup safety Mike Bolden -- was listed on this week's two-deep roster.

Some of those guys...
Were left off the 2 deep because of their injuries. Ellis probably would be starting. Arnfelt is either our 2nd or 3rd best DT, so he would at least be on the 2 deep. Tony Jones would definitely have been on there as well (and all WRs on our two deep will see the field at some point.)
Good!
An enhanced winning opportunity!!! (and a chance for young DBs to get some PT without facing a gunslinger!)

Funny....
Kain Colter — an excellent running QB with a questionable arm strength and passing accuracy, with just a few games of experience.
You know who that sounds like? Dan Persa heading into 2010. And Mike Kafka heading into 2009.
Kafka turned out to be a tremendous QB, and now is on the Eagles backing up Mike Vick (and, from some reports, is arguably ahead of Vince Young and #2). Persa only went on to be an All-B1G QB, go 7-3 in his starts, throw 15 TDs to 4 INTs (and run for 9 more TDs), and set an all-time B1G record for completion percentage in a season (72%+ of his passes).
In other words….NU offensive coordinator Mick McCall is kind of a QB development genius/savant. Sleep on Kain Colter at your own peril.
That being said....
….would I like our chances a hell of a lot better with a healthy Persa? Yes, particularly given how good the BC defense is…..but Colter can be VERY dangerous, if McCall’s track record is any indication.
As the saying goes
“Past performance does not guarantee future success.”
Often left out of this statement (mostly on account of the obviousness)
“…neither does the past performance of others who are, in fact, not Kain Coulter because that would be God damn ridiculous.”
Most of these players weren’t on the two deep because their injuries were known previously. Collin* Ellis was most likely going to be starting at OLB.
