Required Game Week Reading: Northwestern

It's game week, and not a moment too soon.

New season, new BC Interruption feature (with an assist from the V5 guys). We know that you can't get all of your information for each opponent from us. So because we like you, we'll help you guys out by giving you a good breakdown of where to go when you want to read up on the Northwestern Wildcats.

SB Nation:

One of our new favorite SB Nation communities is Sippin On' Purple, who we've caught up with in the past to preview this past season's BC vs. Northwestern NIT game as well as this coming Saturday's BC-NU football game. In addition, we've worked with Rodger Sherman and SOP on the SB Nation Conference Re-Draft, where NU was an absolute steal with the 72nd pick. Seriously though, this love-hate relationship with SOP has got to stop

Media:

Northwestern suffers from many of the same problems that BC faces with respect to local media coverage. Lots of times the 'Cats are lost in the Chicago sports mix behind the Cubs, Sox, Bears, Blackhawks, Bulls, Notre Dame and frankly, the rest of the Big Ten. For a good conference-wide take, check out ESPN's Big Ten Blog where Brian Bennett and Adam Rittenberg do a quality job of covering all things B1G. You can also check out the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times, but NU coverage is hit or miss. For a school that has produced some fine sports journalists such as J.A. Adande, Kevin Blackistone, Rich Eisen, Mike Greenberg, Brent Musberger, Adam Schefter and Michael Wilbon, the school gets little love in its own hometown papers.

For a student perspective, check out The Daily Northwestern, considered by many to be the best college newspaper in the country.

Other Blogs:

Other than SOP, there are two other Northwestern blogs that should be bookmarked for this week. The first is Lake The Posts, which covers NU football like no other. We recently worked with LTP over the summer on an early preview of BC vs. NU so check it out.  The second is Bring Your Champions, They're Our Meat which, if nothing else, has one hell of a blog name.

Message Boards:

If you want to visit message boards to talk with Northwestern fans, you can visit the Rivals (WildcatReport.com) and Scout (PurpleWildcats.com) sites.

Official Site:

You can find the Northwestern Wildcats official site here, where you can learn all about the 'Cats National Championship ... women's lacrosse team. Also check out PersaStrong, NU's official website for Dan Persa's 2011 Heisman campaign.

Any other Northwestern sites that we missed out on or overlooked? Let us know in the comments.

Dear Gene...

Please get going on this. I know that you’re not exactly skilled when it comes to BC marketing, so here we go:
If you want your team to be in the national spotlight, the Athletic Department needs to actually promote the team. You need to talk about your players, how awesome they are, and build hype around them.
Did you know that one of Boston College’s own, Luke Kuechly, led the NATION in tackles, was the stalwart of the defense, and is generally accepted as the second coming of Superman? You did? Do other people know you know about Kuechly? No? Oh that’s a shame. Maybe you should market these facts.
I understand that no one player is above the team, but promoting a fantastic player like Luke or Montel Harris, promotes our team. It brings attention and relevance to our beloved University and the team.
Please, get on board with Luke Kuechly’s Heisman campaign. Don’t put it off until next year. If he’s going to win next year, we need to start building the support behind him now.

Regards,
   A Boston College fan

Forget the Heisman

At the very least, could we at least promote #40 for the Bednarik, Lott, Butkus, Walter Camp and the 40 other watch lists Kuechly was named to? It doesn’t take a lot of effort to create a webpage, buy a URL and throw up a couple of promotional videos.

Ndamukong Suh proved a defensive player can be a Heisman finalist. Granted 1) he played for a “traditional” football powerhouse (Nebraska) and 2) Enjoyed a decent season that year (9-3). But more importantly, you heard his name everywhere. People were talking about him.
It will take a miracle season from BC for #40 to be considered, but it will also take the support of the AD. I’m not saying that I think he’ll ever win it (I’ll be somewhat realistic), but it would be refreshing to see a school (especially ours) press for a defensive player as a legitimate Heisman candidate.

Mainstream media

And unfortunately to them sacks >>>>>>> tackles. Could we see more LB pressure from BC this year?

re: love/hate

I really like this site, actually. I’m betting most of you will not like us by the end of the week, and for that, I apologize.
BTW, I’m a Yankees fan.

Best NU Related Website is...

Evan Watkins’ Site

If you want a real behind the scenes look at NU football through a fictionalized version of the 3rd/4th string quarterback.
