With kickoff to Boston College vs. Northwestern just a week away, let's begin our full preview of the game by comparing each position side-by-side.
QB: Chase Rettig (BC) vs. Dan Persa/Kain Colter (NW)
Tough one here. Persa may not play a lot of snaps at BC (even though he is starting). Persa isn't 100% either. Colter is a good runner, but he hasn't proved himself passing the ball yet. Rettig has shown improvement, but he's a mystery too. I'm going with slight NW here.
Verdict: NW
RB: Andre Williams, Tahj Kimble, Rolandan Finch (BC) vs. Mike Trumpy, Jacob Schmidt, Adonis Smith (NW)
Easy pick. Northwestern had virtually no running game last year, while Andre Williams already has proved himself, and Kimble and Finch have shown flashes in practices and scrimmages.
Verdict: BC
WR: Colin Larmond Jr, Ifeanyi Momah, Bobby Swigert (BC) vs. Jeremy Ebert, Demetrius Fields, Rashad Lawrence (NW)
A little tough, but when you have 2 All-B1G receivers, it's tough to lose. Larmond's return is a big boost to the BC receiving corps, but Ebert will be trouble to a mysterious BC secondary.
Verdict: NW
TE: Chris Pantale, Lars Anderson (BC) vs. Drake Dunsmore, Jack Konopka (NW)
Really tough one. Both Pantale and Dunsmore are good receivers, but the difference to me is that Pantale is a good blocker, while Dunsmore, is well, a horrible blocker.
Verdict: BC
OL: John Wetzel, Nate Richman, Mark Spinney, Ian White, Emmett Cleary (BC) vs. Al Netter, Brian Mulroe, Brandon Vitabile, Ben Burkett, Patrick Ward (NW)
Easy. Dan Persa was pressured time and time again last season, so he had to scramble most of the time. BC has an offensive line too big and physical for Northwestern.
Verdict: BC
DL: Kasim Edebali, Kaleb Ramsey, Dillon Quinn, Max Holloway (BC) vs. Tyler Scott, Vince Browne, Niko Mafuli, Jack DiNardo (NW)
Easy. BC had more sacks and a better run stopping defensive line.
Verdict: BC
LB: Kevin Pierre-Louis, Luke Kuechly, Steele Devitto (BC) vs. Ben Johnson, Bryce McNaul, David Nwabuisi (NW)
Do I even have to pick this?
Verdict: BC
Secondary: Donnie Fletcher, C.J. Jones, Jim Noel, Hampton Hughes/Sean Sylvia (BC) vs. Jordan Mabin, Jeravin Matthews, Brian Peters, David Arnold (NW)
This is the toughest one to pick. While I would easily say BC if they still had LeGrande and Okaroha, but they don't. However, let's remember the Syracuse game. Receiver Ryan Lindsey started at corner, and played admirably well. BC lacks depth, but Noel, Fletcher, and Jones are solid players. Northwestern also had the 95th ranked pass defense.
Verdict: BC
Special Teams: Nate Freese, Ryan Quigley, Bobby Swigert (BC) vs. Jeff Budzien, Brandon Williams, Venric Mark (NW)
BC has the better Kicker, but Northwestern has the better punter and returner.
Verdict: NW
