EA Sports NCAA Football 12 Ratings Released, Boston College Ranked 67th Overall?
The next release of EA Sports' popular NCAA Football series is right around the corner. Tradition Sports Online has a sneak peek into this year's team ratings, and it's not good news for Superfans. BC fans looking to build an Online Dynasty where Chase Rettig wins back-to-back Heisman Trophies, Montel Harris wins the Doak Walker and the Eagles rattle off three straight BCS National Championship Game victories may find it tough sledding this year.
Boston College is ranked 67th overall in this year's version of the game, somewhere between the Hoke-less San Diego State Aztecs (at 65) and Fresno State Bulldogs (68). Great.
The Eagles received a B+ rating overall, B on offense, B+ on defense (huh?), B- on special teams (can't really complain there), and a 3 rating in the Prestige category (on a 6-point scale). Sure, EA has gotta sell video games, but I don't think the programmers have fully factored in the Chase Rettig-Kevin Rogers dynamic duo yet.
Here's a look at the rest of the ACC and BC's 2011 opponents:
| Ranking | Team | Rating | Offense | Defense | Sp. Teams | Prestige |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 35 | Northwestern Wildcats | B+ | B+ | B | C+ | 3 |
| 30 | @ Central Florida Knights | B+ | B+ | B | C+ | 3 |
| 92 | Duke Blue Devils | B- | B+ | C+ | B- | 2 |
| NR | UMass Minutemen | NR | NR | NR | NR | NR |
| 84 | Wake Forest Demon Deacons | C+ | C+ | C+ | C | 2 |
| 32 | @ Clemson Tigers | B+ | B+ | B+ | B | 4 |
| 17 | @ Virginia Tech Hokies | A- | B+ | B+ | B- | 5 |
| 40 | @ Maryland Terrapins | B+ | B+ | B | B | 3 |
| 10 | Florida St. Seminoles | A | A | B+ | A- | 5 |
| 24 | N.C. State Wolfpack | B+ | B+ | B | B- | 3 |

| 53 | North Carolina Tar Heels | B+ | B+ | B+ | B+ | 4 |
| 57 | Virginia Cavaliers | B | B- | B | C | 3 |
Thoughts / comments on the ratings? I know some of you have a beef with these ratings, so let's hear 'em. I'll go first.
UCF same prestige ranking as BC, a school that's been playing I-A ball since 1996??
The Knights defense gets a B despite returning only four starters on that side of the ball?
Beamer Ball / Hokies special teams a B-?
N.C. State a top 25 team? Did they program out Russell Wilson yet?

Defense
I already complained about this on another post, but a B+? BC was one of the best defenses in the league last year and we are half a letter grade above Northwestern’s putrid D? And how the hell are we below the U?

Clemson has a B on special teams?
Did they watch a single game this past year? It was all we were good at?

Math Involved?
Maybe I have too much faith in the NCAA staff in hoping that they don’t arbitrarily assign letter grades to each team in the game. Based upon an earlier post about how BC is one of the top 10 teams that plays above the projected value of its recruits (I could not seem to find the post no matter how hard I looked) these numbers make sense. A team like Miami being 34 is absolute garbage on the grounds that they were 7-6 last year, are breaking in a new coach, and Jacory Harris. Mathematically speaking though, they certainly have the talent to be 34 if the letter grades for the whole team are created by some formula involving the averages of the overall ratings of the individual players. Their speed, size, strength and tangible qualities of good football players should make them a good team. Contrarily, Anthony Castonzo had a recruiting ranking of 40 (which is unranked) according to espn.com when he committed in 2007 and probably got no statistical respect by the programmers for a couple years. I wish I could cite the original post because I bet the 10 teams that had high recruiting rankings and low actual rankings are doing pretty well on the team rating list.
Maybe everyone assumed this and I’m pointing out the obvious, or maybe they should make factors such as the ability to develop players, team intelligence, or team defense stronger components of the equation. But in a video game where everything is odds and numbers and averages, the weight of a high Luke Kuechly ranking can’t balance the lack of respect for the many currently unknown players on a northeast ACC team’s defense creating a lower than should be letter grade—still won’t stop me from consecutive Heismans though.

BC’s B+ on defense is low, but I would argue that a B on offense is exceptionally generous…so it kinda averages out.
Agreed.
They were also pretty generous on BC’s special teams IMO.

Prestige rankings
Can’t complain too much about BC’s individual unit rankings, but the prestige rankings are all out of whack:
6 – none
5 – Florida State, Virginia Tech, Notre Dame, Miami
4 – Georgia Tech, Clemson, North Carolina
3 – BC, Northwestern, Central Florida, Maryland, N.C. State, Virginia
2 – Duke, Wake Forest
1 – none
My two biggest complaints are UNC at 4 and UCF at 3. We aren’t that far removed from 2-10 seasons at Carolina, and Central Florida has been playing Division I-A football for all of 15 seasons. One bowl win over UGA doesn’t make your program as prestigious as those other schools. Plus … 1-12 record against BCS opponents.

Miami
i cant get past Miami’s rankings…first off, A- on offense AND defense. Then, those two A- along with a B+ on special teams gives them an overall ranking of a straight A. makes no sense…
