2012 NFL Mock Draft: Is Luke Kuechly A First Rounder Next Year?

Brian: Because apparently it's never too early to look ahead to the next NFL Draft, SB Nation's Brian Galliford took a crack at projecting out the first round of next year's Draft. And with the 31st overall pick of the 2012 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots select ...

"Luke Kuechly, LB, Boston College. This local product is a perfect fit for the Patriots, even if they've already got Jerod Mayo and Brandon Spikes inside."

Uh oh. Kuechly turning pro a year early? What do you think? Is next year it for Kuechly? And do you think he's a first rounder?

Jeff: No, I do not think next year is it for Kuechly. For Kuechly to leave early, he would have to be a first rounder. I don't see him leaving if he's projected any less than a first round pick. From everything we know, he is not having any trouble academically and is happy at BC. Kuechly is a great player but does not have the typical size and speed measurables that NFL teams usually look for. He might be the best college linebacker in college football next season but there is no scenario where I see him being the top linebacker selected in the 2012 or 2013 NFL Draft. An NFL team will not use that high a pick on a linebacker that doesn't have more size and at least just as much quickness.

Kuechly has superior instincts to those who he'll be compared to but that trait will not be given enough weight by the GMs of the NFL to make him the top one or two LBs selected in the draft. I think Luke Kuechly will play two more seasons and then will get drafted, but probably a second or third round pick.

Brian: Any other BC players on your radar for 2012 NFL Draft prospects? Where do you think BC running back Montel Harris projects? How about Colin Larmond Jr or Ifeanyi Momah? Your thoughts?

Jeff: I expect Montel Harris to be a 2012 draft pick. If he recovers fully from injury and has a great statistical season this year, then I think he will even be a first round pick. How high Harris will go is still very much up in the air, but I think it is highly likely that he'll be drafted especially since smaller backs in the NFL have had a little more success recently. Who else will get drafted this season though? I don't know. I do not think any wide outs will get drafted. There are not many prospects to be future NFL players for 2012 in my opinion, partly because we just don't have many seniors this year.

I think Donnie Fletcher will definitely be taken in this draft. If he has his best season, he could be a late 3rd or early 4th round pick.

Draft Picks

I hope you’re right on Luke but I think it’s 50/50. It also could depend on what the new CBA looks like regrading rookie salary scales.

I love Montel but there is no way he’s a first round pick. I think he’ll be a day 3 type pick. Tashard Choice was a 4th round pick and I think that’s a decent comparison in terms of pro potential.

I agree that Fletcher could be drafted with a good year. If nothing else, he’s a 6’1 corner with talent and those aren’t especially common.

I think Kaleb Ramsey might have a shot if he stays healthy. I also think it’s conceivable but that Richman or Spinney gets draft late with a great year, but both of those are longshots.

Depends on the Draft Class

If RB is weak next year, he could go earlier.

Montel Harris comparison

I was thinking more Ryan Williams (early 2nd round) than Tashard Choice (fourth round).

Am I off here?

Montel

Williams is listed at 5’9" and 212 lbs. I thought that Montel was a little lighter, closer to 200. Also, Montel’s breakaway speed isn’t very good. I remember him getting caught from behind twice against FSU this year after he had broken through the FSU secondary…Montel seems like the type of player that would dominate drills testing short bursts of speed and change of direction type stuff, not straight away speed.

Agreed

Williams was more of a gamebreaker. Unfortunately, I think Montel’s 40 time will prevent him from going in the first few rounds.

I know we are talking about his draft prospects...

But a 40 time won’t necessarily prevent him from becoming an effective NFL RB. I know this is an extreme example because there are dozens of guys like him that never worked out, but Arian Foster had terrible 40 times at his pro day (4.73 and 4.69). He had a pretty decent year last year.

The emphasis on 40 times baffles me

I know...

Which is why I said “I know we are talking about draft prospects, but”. Sorry for changing the subject a bit.

BC and draft

Luke- Can be a 1st round projected, but after the combine, i doubt he’s there. He wont perform as well on the “measurables”. GM’s are idiots.

Montel- i loved when castonzo got drafted, I really tried hard to watch him block, but i was drawn to Montel cutting and accelerating. That being said, he’s undersized for RB and while he put up huge numbers at BC, so did derrick knight. I think he’s drafted in the 3rd to 4th round, because durability, size and breakway speed will all be a concern.

Donnie Fletcher- get’s drafted before Montel, if he continues to put up numbers, in a system that hasn’t gotten pressure on the qb for 3 years.

Quality of players

Why are the players at BC looked at with such a great amount of disrespect by “outside interests”. Is the talent level really that bad? If BC has a bad season again next year, then there is something afoot and something needs to be evaluated. There is no doubt at all of the “Peter Principle” at work here. Spaziani has reached his level of mediocrity. He is ranked at 11 in an evaluation of ACC coaches. Only TOB was ranked lower. Compare the enthusiasm comparison generated by Brian Kelly versus Spaziani. What happened to Spaziani? He was known for creating the enthusiasm which kept BC afloat. Now, he is obviously the anchor which is “sinking the Titanic”.
