2011 NFL Draft: BC's Mark Herzlich Among 25 Players Attending NFL Draft

Photo

The NFL announced today that BC's Mark Herzlich will be among the NFL Draft prospects attending this week's NFL Draft in New York. Herzlich, along with Virginia Tech's Ryan Williams, are the ACC's two representatives attending this week's Draft activities.

The other NFL Draft prospects attending the event include Cam Newton, Nick Fairley, Blaine Gabbert, Patrick Peterson, Von Miller, Mark Ingram, A.J. Green, Julio Jones, Adrian Clayborne and Ryan Kerrigan. In all, a record 25 players are confirmed to attend this year's Draft.

On Wednesday, Draft prospects will participate in a youth football clinic, a photo opp atop NYC's Radio City Music Hall, followed by ringing the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange. On Thursday, prospects will  visit with pediatric patients in the Kravis Children's Hospital at The Mount Sinai Medical Center before heading back to Radio City for round 1.

The first round of the 2011 NFL Draft starts at 8 p.m. (ET) on Thursday, April 28th. The draft continues at 6:00 PM Friday with rounds 2-3, followed by rounds 4-7 on Saturday, starting at noon. You can find TV coverage on NFL Network and ESPN/ESPN2 on all three days.

Hope he's not still there after day 1

I mean there is a chance this happens, but let’s hope teams take a chance on him.

Why Herzlich?

I don’t think that I have seen a mock draft where Herzlich has been taken in the first round. A lot of mock drafts (not that they know anything) have him going as late as the sixth round.

Isn’t this going to be brutal to watch Herzlich hang out in the room all by himself Thursday night, Friday night, and most of Saturday?

Also, does anyone know if Castonzo was invited? Everyone has him going in the first, so why would Herzlich get invited and not Castonzo?

Winter or Spring

Life is “cold and fickle”. I love Mark H and everything that he stands for. However, his injury may lead him not to be drafted at all. Will “hope” triumph or will the “coldness of fate” win the day?

Ahhhh, the mysteries of JBQ’s quotations. Everyone pretty much “agrees” that Herzlich will be drafted. I “hope” he goes in a higher round, “especially” because he’s now been invited. It would look “bad” if the NFL invited him only to have him wait around.

he’s going because regardless of when he goes nobody is going to get a warmer reception… someone will take a chance on Herzlich and, even though it will be a mid-round, everyone will praise the team that takes the risk because of how great his story is

NFL gives Herz a flexible schedule
Boston College linebacker Mark Herzlich will be allowed to stay as long, or short, as he’d like at the 2011 NFL Draft, according to league sources.

Herzlich, whose struggle against cancer is one of the more gripping emotional sagas of this draft, will attend the event, but has been granted open-ended status in terms of his participation this weekend.

I’m sure his invite will give the NFL a nice little PR boost in their PR war with the Players Union too. So there’s that, too.

It's a saavy move by the NFL

The ACC used his great story for PR purposes. The NCAA did. ESPN did. Now it’s the NFL’s turn.

And it’s such a phenomenal story I can’t blame them and I’ll watch again.
