Hockey East Tournament Seeding Scenarios

The Eagles know what they need to do tonight to win the Hockey East regular season title. Win or tie the Wildcats tonight at the Whittemore Center and the Eagles will earn the Hockey East Tournament no. 1 seed and take home their first regular season title in six seasons.

Last night's 4-0 victory also guarantees that BC will finish either 1 or 2 in the Hockey East regular season standings.

Taking a trip around the Hockey East box scores from last night, BU was a 3-2 winner over Northeastern, Maine a 4-3 winner at UMass and Merrimack a 6-1 winner over Providence. UMass Lowell and Vermont skated to a 4-4 tie

Let's take a look at the rest of the Hockey East Tournament seeding scenarios with just one night left.

Boston College Eagles (39 points -- 19-6-1)

- The Terriers will be the No. 3 seed with a win AND a UNH win or tie

- The Terriers will be the No. 3 seed with a loss AND a Merrimack loss

- The Terriers will be the No. 4 seed with a loss AND a Merrimack win or tie

Merrimack Warriors (35 points -- 16-7-3)

Maine Black Bears (32 points -- 14-8-4)

Northeastern Huskies (25 points -- 9-10-7)

- The Huskies will be the No. 6 seed

Vermont Catamounts (17 points -- 5-14-7)

- The Catamounts will be the No. 7 seed with a win or tie vs. UMass Lowell
- The Catamounts will be the No. 7 seed with a loss AND a UMass tie or loss
- The Catamounts will be the No. 8 seed with a loss AND a UMass win (losing the head-to-head tiebreaker 1-2-0)

Massachusetts Minutemen (15 points -- 5-16-5)

- The Minutemen will be the No. 7 seed with a win over Maine AND a Vermont loss
- The Minutemen will be the No. 8 seed with a tie over Maine
- The Minutemen will be the No. 8 seed with a loss AND a Providence tie or loss
- The Minutemen will miss the Hockey East Tournament with a loss AND a Providence win (losing the head-to-head tiebreaker 0-1-2)

Providence Friars (13 points -- 3-16-7)

- The Friars will be the No. 8 seed with a win over Merrimack AND a UMass loss
- The Friars will miss the Hockey East Tournament with a tie or loss

UMass Lowell River Hawks (10 points -- 4-20-2)

- The River Hawks season ends tonight in Burlington

So the Eagles, locked into either the No. 1 or No. 2 seeds, will face either Vermont, UMass or Providence in the Hockey East Quarterfinals next weekend. BC won the season series with all three of those programs, going 3-0-0 against UMass and Providence and 2-1-0 against Vermont. Luckily, BC avoids both the #5 Maine Black Bears and the #6 Northeastern Huskies -- both dangerous outs.

BRING IT!

Question...

So if BC ties UNH, both BC and UNH are the #1 seed?

BC wins Hockey East and the #1 seed with a tie tonight. UNH needs to win to take first.
