2011 NCAA Tournament Second Round: Thursday Open Thread

It's the most wonderful time of the year ... Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Oh yeah, and Happy March Madness! Sixty-four teams not named Boston College will try to make it to Houston and cut down the nets on April 4. Leave your thoughts on the day's Tournament action below, or use the opportunity to discuss the following topics:

- Last night, did VCU prove the doubters wrong or did USC prove the doubters right?
- How will Clemson perform after its 36 hour Dayton-to-Tampa road trip?
- Who are your tournament dark horses?
- How many Final Four teams will come from the Big East? All of them?
- Best Irish pub in Boston?
- The ACC is 3-0 thus far in the NIT. Discuss.

Here is the day's schedule:

12:15 PM: (12) Clemson vs. (5) West Virginia, CBS
12:40 PM: (9) Old Dominion vs. (8) Butler, truTV
1:40 PM: (13) Morehead State vs. (4) Louisville, TBS
2:10 PM: (10) Penn State vs. (7) Temple, TNT

2:45 PM: (13) Princeton vs. (4) Kentucky, CBS
3:10 PM: (16) North Carolina-Asheville vs. (1) Pittsburgh, truTV
4:10 PM: (12) Richmond vs. (5) Vanderbilt, TBS
4:40 PM: (15) Northern Colorado vs. (2) San Diego State, TNT

6:50 PM: (15) UC Santa Barbara vs. (2) Florida, TBS
7:15 PM: (14) Wofford vs. (3) Brigham Young, CBS
7:20 PM: (14) Bucknell vs. (3) Connecticut, TNT
7:27 PM: (13) Belmont vs. (4) Wisconsin, truTV

9:20 PM: (10) Michigan State vs. (7) UCLA, TBS
9:45 PM: (11) Gonzaga vs. (6) St. John's, CBS
9:50 PM: (11) Missouri vs. (6) Cincinnati, TNT
9:57 PM: (12) Utah State vs. (5) Kansas State, truTV

Go Bucknell!

1. USC sucks, everyone sees that now
2. Surprisingly well I think
3. Everybody and their mother is going to say Richmond here I believe. Does K-State count as an upset since a lot of people are picking Utah State? Maybe i’ll go with Old Dominion then. Even though Pitt is in my championship game. This bracket will be a mess.
4. 2. Pitt and Uconn
5. Black Rose, although I always go to McFadden’s. Thank god for happy hour.

6. The ACC has had pretty easy matchups in the NIT. Don’t let a 3-0 start fool you, at any point one of us can fall. BC against Northwestern is a tough matchup, but as long as we play like we did in the first half of mcneese st, we should win. Wichita St could easily give Virginia Tech a scare, but should be a win for VT. On the other hand, Miami will probably fall to Missouri St.

Clemson?

Does Clemson count as a dark horse? If they win, I could easily see them beating the Princeton / Kentucky winner.

I’d count Clemson as a dark horse. I don’t really see Princeton standing a chance against Kentucky, but Kentucky is a team a lot like WVU….and they both don’t play all too well against defenses like Clemson’s.

P.S. It feels really weird rooting for Clemson considering..

I also picked Belmont and Utah State to win. If that happens, one of those teams is going to the Sweet 16.

The SouthEast bracket is definitely going to be messy.

Laziness … apathy …

One of the two.

My father in-law did…he knew they were instate rivals (at least from MS’ perspective) and noted that they were knocked out by Louisville in one of the past couple tournaments.

Hand up Man UP

Got em.
And a little side action on 1+ 13 seed making the next round

I’m dinging your Morehead State pick a bit because I’m pretty sure you picked all 11 Big East teams to lose in the first round … ;)

Go UNC-Asheville!

Duke, again.

USC proved me right.
I had them as an upset, tough one.
I like Wisconsin in the 4 and Washington and Purdue in the 8. Not very horsey but still.
None of them! Duke wins again.
No clue.
I’d be cursing if they weren’t.
