2011 Beanpot Tournament: Boston College Vs. Northeastern Game Thread (7:30 PM EDT, NESN)

Northeastern2_medium vs. Bostoncollege_medium

Northeastern Huskies (10-11-6, 8-8-5 Hockey East) vs. No. 1 Boston College Eagles (21-6-0, 16-5-0 Hockey East)

What: 59th Annual Beanpot Tournament Championship Game
Time: 7:30 EDT
Date: Monday, February 14, 2011
Place: TD Garden (cap. 17,565), Boston, Ma.
TV: NESN
Internet Radio: BCEagles.com (Jon Rish play-by-play and Ken Hodge color)

Last Time Out: The Eagles shut out Providence 3-0 to move to 21-6-0 (16-5-0 Hockey East) on the season.

Series: BC and Northeastern have previously met 207 times. Boston College leads the all-time series 149-45-13.
Last Meeting: Boston College 2, Northeastern 0 (Oct. 9, 2010)
Last Meeting at TD Garden: Northeastern 6, Boston College 1 (Feb. 2, 2009 -- Beanpot Tournament Semifinal)

Last Five Meetings:

W - Boston College 2, at Northeastern 0 (October 9, 2010)
W - at Boston College 7, Northeastern 1 (February 21, 2010)
L - at Northeastern 3, Boston College 2 (February 19, 2010)
W - at Boston College 5, Northeastern 1 (November 7, 2009)
W - at Boston College 4, Northeastern 1 (March 7, 2009)

Trends: The Eagles, winners of six straight and 13 of their last 14 games, are just 5-5 in their last 10 games against the Huskies. Northeastern hasn't won a Beanpot Championship since 1988. That's quite a few years ago (I was 6). The Huskies are, however, off to a fast start in 2011, having gone 7-2-2 since the new year. For being just a four team tournament, BC and Northeastern have amazingly only met two other times in the Beanpot Championship Game. Northeastern won in 1980 (5-4 OT), while Boston College won in 1983 (8-2).

Northeastern's Leading Scorers: Sr. Wade MacLeod (13-16-29), Sr. Tyler McNeely (10-13-23), Sr. Steve Silva (6-11-17), Fr. Brodie Reid (5-12-17)
Northeastern's Leading Goaltender: So. Chris Rawlings (9-9-6, 2.12 GAA, .935 SV%)

BEANPOT!!!! Leave your thoughts on the game below. Go Eagles!

Prediction: Sticking with my pre-Tournament prediction here. Boston College 6, Northeastern 3 (MVP: Cam Atkinson)
Record-to-date: 17-7-0

Worried

This sounds strange – considering the inconsistencies of our other teams – but I am worried this year’s hockey team has peaked too early. The Beanpot is usually the start of our hot streak, but this year we have been hot for a while – how long can we sustain it?

This 4-4 game isn’t filling me with confidence. C’mon Musey!

Man it hurts losing to BU, but this would be really bad – being No. 1 and allowing NE to win their first Pot in 23 years!

by Anfield10 on Feb 14, 2011 9:12 PM EST reply actions

Not too worried

BC has an easier schedule the rest of the way (2x Northeastern, 2x UMass, 2x UNH). This is the biggest Northeastern hockey game in a long, long time…

BC Interruption, SBN's Boston College Eagles blog

by Brian Favat on Feb 14, 2011 9:15 PM EST up reply actions

OK I'll relax then

I just tend to over worry with the hockey team since I put so many eggs in this basket. I can’t wait to see this team on TV again (I’m down south). I like listening on the radio, but it can get so intense!

by Anfield10 on Feb 14, 2011 9:22 PM EST up reply actions

A loss would suck, but wouldn’t be very significant to BC’s title run this year. The games this weekend against Northeastern are infinitely more important.

BC Interruption, SBN's Boston College Eagles blog

by Brian Favat on Feb 14, 2011 9:27 PM EST up reply actions

As you would expect, Northeastern is playing w the reckless abandon of a team with nothing to lose (and everything to gain). In essance, this is their NCAA tourny.

Offensive firepower will never be a problem for this team.

Really proud of how these forward lines have played tonight (even if they’ve had some defensive breakdowns on odd man rushes).

Over/Under

That over/under mentioned earlier of 13.5 is starting to look like it might be in play.

Come on Eagles!

Cam has been surprisingly quiet tonight. Keep in mind I am listening on radio – he may be heavily involved, but I haven’t heard his name much

by Anfield10 on Feb 14, 2011 9:52 PM EST reply actions

Good point- as (presumably) a Hobey short lister, he’s been super quiet on the big stage.

by Eagle in Brighton on Feb 14, 2011 9:54 PM EST up reply actions

"Big stage" = NESN?

I think Atkinson deserves to be in the Hobey Hat Trick, but I think Atkinson and Muse will cancel each other out (again). BC guys tend to do that.

A pun on “sucks to be you.” In this form, it refers to those unfortunate souls who attend Boston University. Often heard at hockey games.

BU student: We just lost to 5-0 to Boston College. Our season is over.

BC student: Sucks to BU.
