Would Colleges Be Better Off Without Football? (The Atlantic)
"Everything we think we know about college football's impact on students' grades, graduation rates, rankings, and school finances adds up to this: Football might be bad for some colleges"
Very interesting article that includes, of course, the Hail Mary and the ensuing 30% bump in freshman applications BC saw the following year. Equally interesting finding that public universities that win major bowls or in-state rivalries receive more funding from state legislators...

Flutie Myth
The article is wrong. There was no one-year 30% increase in applications. Applications did increase by around 30% over the two-year period from 1983-1985, though. All the data is at www.bc.edu/factbook.
One thing that people always seem to fail to realize when telling the feel-good story about the “Flutie Effect” is how short-lived it was. Although applications spiked temporarily, the effect wore off, and by 1990 BC was once again receiving less applications than in 1983.
Apparently Flutie really could scramble
Also, note the asterisk at the end of the article:
“An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that Doug Flutie led Boston College to a win over the University of Miami in the 1984 Orange Bowl. While the game was played at the Miami Orange Bowl stadium, it was not the actual bowl championship game. Flutie’s catch, however, was nonetheless miraculous. "
Flutie’s catch?
You mean you never saw Flutie’s catch that won the Orange Bowl for BC over Miami??

Do colleges really need libraries and books with great football programs???
Are classes really necessary at BC, Alabama or LSU anymore?
Me thinks not.
That is why I proudly wear my 20 years straight - back-to-back!!!!—— NCAA Graduation Rate National Champion T-Shirt in the Fort Worth Stockyards amongst the LSU, UT, TCU, Alabama, Oklahoma, Baylor and all the great Football and Baseball school National Championship and Big Boy Bowl T-Shirts - since that B+ I got in The Management of Non-Bank Financial Institutions in Fulton Hall 201 in 1974, which is my most cherished BC memory!
I only wish Alumni had 44,500 BC fans in there to witness my final exam that day!
That woulda filled the now aluminum stands!!!
Flutie to Phelan?
Please.
If not for Jerry York, I think most BC fans would be insane.
Some already are. I am very close.
I hope that some stray bull from the Fort Worth Stock Show rodeo would trample me to death if I ever wore a sissified, worthless T-Shirt like that in the Stockyards and they swept my carass into the Trinity river.
2012 - THE WORST IS YET TO COME!!
I am already compling and updating the new list for the Spazoo Excuse Train posted on the SB National site last year.
It will be posted this year and of course formatted by BF.
LOL!
