A Notre Dame implosion

So tell me..what was most fun about watching Notre Dame crap on themselves in the Champs Sports Bowl?

- The disgust on the face of Brian Kelly each time his quarterbacks made yet another boneheaded decision?

- The look on the face of those quarterbacks each time came off the field knowing they had to deal with Kelly's ravings?

- Michael Floyd showing his true character essentially asking out of the game after "hurting himself", or being "punched in the stomach" as was reported?

- Brian Kelly leaving his All-American WR on the bench during the final drive of the game?

- The look of complete despair from Lou Holtz in the post game show?

- The smile (OK..he wanted to break out laughing hysterically) of satisfaction on the face of Mark May watching Lou's look of despair?

For all the hype about Brian Kelly being the guy to turn ND around, it just hasn't happened. You can even go so far to say that the Irish are in as much turmoil as they have ever been in right now. Attitude and psyche, this was a team that came apart at the seams at its most critical positions, quarterback and head coach.

Onward to Victory! LOL

Good old Schadenfruede

Nice pallet cleanser after the dual losses tonight.

I was ashamed of BC Guy Joe Tessitore

For shamelessly plugging the “Return To Glory” theme during the pre-game and early portion of the game. He should know better. ND is nothing but a mediocre team with a great history from decades ago. It’s as relevant to today as the New York Yankees’ 27 World Series titles. Well, except that the Yankees are still championship contenders, unlike the Irish.

Even ND Needs More Speed on Defense

Why ND stopped blitzing FSU was a mystery????

Their DB’s were simply outclassed by talent and speed in the second half.

The real schadenfruede is BC is still as slow as frozen molasses and getting no talent and speed in all the key skill positions.

Our recruiting talent gap compared to Atlantic rivals in the last 3 years was evident in the last 2 years and will get worse.

Our BC DB’s are pedestrian and our WR’s are even slower.

Joe was just following the ND House rules at ESPN. ESPN is the 6,000,000 pound Gorilla and they get what they want and wield vast influence and power over many stealth issues.

ESPN is soon to be the new "NCAA"and watch for the changes.

That graphic on ND QB’s was interesting, but still top line QB’s want to play for Brian Kelly.

ND is recruiting more speed and skilled players, but their QB’s need more playing time.

BC’s new spread offense has none of the WR tools and Offensive line training…..and Rettig has a long learning curve.

Hopefully Spazoo’s last hurrah since Doug Martin came cheap and a whole new flush is needed at the Heights.

The MALAISE is here. The worst is yet to come for BC Nation in football.

I know you are committed to your perception of the unvarnished truth, but give some thought to readability.

Osprey

I know you are committed to your version of English and your views, but just wait 11 months.

BC Football has slide a lot more than most realize and I sadly we be proven correct.

BC is recruiting Colonial level talent - and has been since Spazoo was hired.

We are in the deep abyss of Dante’s last rectum of hell.

Easy schedule in 2012???

BC will be lucky to win 6 and if we play Army early at Alumni, before the spread offense is in low gear with our slow WR’s, we may stay in that abyss for a few more years.

Spazoo is an incompetent idiot.

GDF is responsible.

by BCEagle74 on Dec 30, 2011 9:14 PM EST up reply actions

The schedule is just as, if not more, unforgiving as it was this year.

Notre Dame, Virginia Tech and Clemson will all likely be ranked Top 25 by time they hit the Heights. Florida State (likely) and Georgia Tech (possibly) may also be ranked.

Here’s how the sched breaks down:

2011 wins over 2012 opponents (3) — Maryland, Miami, at N.C. State

Can probably count 2 of those 3 as likely wins.

2011 close losses (3) — at Northwestern, Notre Dame, at Wake Forest

BC may win 1 of these games. Two would be a stretch.

2011 losses in non-competitive showings (3) — Clemson, Virginia Tech, at Florida State

We aren’t winning any of these games.

The rest (3) — Army, Maine, at Georgia Tech

Maine is a win. At Georgia Tech is likely a loss and who knows with Army.

I could 5-6 wins in 2012. Ever to Mediocrity!

Ospraying on me and Others? Question:

Tell us what part of the record of performance or analysis by BF, me and others is incorrect?

The record versus ranked teams? Does that not make you puke? 42 Games and not one Signature WIN?

WTF??
*******
BC is 1-11 versus teams ranked in the AP FINAL TOP 25’s** in the Spazoo Regime in the last 3 years:

I am not necessarily disagreeing with you

Yes, BC football is in bad shape. Yes GDF is very bad AD and Spaz is incompetent

But tell me something new, something interesting. And allow in a few rays of hope too

Rays of Hope and Change

Change is coming in December 2012.

Both Obama and GDF and Spazoo will be gone.

The Worst will bring swift changes, even for the stubborn and arrogant BC Trustees, Leahy and Neenan.

I was one year off.

That is the Hope…and stop posting pictures of me with that big bib eating my breakfast!

I don’t know … I don’t like Florida State all that much, either.

by Brian Favat on Dec 30, 2011 11:01 AM EST up reply actions

Let’s heap all sorts of importance on a meaningless exhibition game (but didn’t Florida State win this game?).

Both of these programs are light years ahead of BC now. What’s your point again?

by Brian Favat on Dec 30, 2011 1:11 PM EST up reply actions

I’ve never understood why people refer to bowl games as “exhibition games.” They count towards a team’s record. They count toward a team’s final ranking.

An exhibition game typically does not count toward a team’s record or ranking, and is often played against a team from an entirely different league (e.g. BC hockey plays exhibition games against the US Developmental teams, BC hoops plays exhibition games against D-2 opponents).

by footb on Dec 30, 2011 1:31 PM EST up reply actions

too literal, perhaps?

by eagleosprey on Dec 30, 2011 3:26 PM EST up reply actions

Exhibition — as in 34 of 35 games have no bearing on the sport’s eventual champion, the games are played 3-6 weeks after the regular season ends, players and teams motivations are varied and many teams don’t play under the coach that led them during the regular season.

Programs can also decline to participate in bowl games.

Bowl games count in the W/L columns, sure, but affect the rankings of only 1/3 programs that participate in them.

To me, those factors don’t add up to having much, if any, significance.

by Brian Favat on Dec 30, 2011 8:08 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

You mean another game when their offense stalled out for half the game again?

Fisher can recruit, and Stoops can coach D, but I do question Fisher’s in game coaching and whatever they are doing with all that offensive talent.

My point is easy, Fav. I made it clear. I took exception to the fact that you claimed FSU was a national title contender. You keep asking me what that has to do with BC. I keep telling you nothing.

I was just curious why you thought FSU was a national title contender because you happened to say so in a post. Isn’t that easy to figure out>

by Brian Favat on Dec 30, 2011 11:02 AM EST up reply actions

except ND is pseudo Irish .. ND does not desreve the words "IRISH" it should say "SLAVS"

The true home of the Irish in higher education is, was and always will be BC. No question.

ND was founded by non-Irish and not for anybody Irish either. Their name is a fluke and a fraud.

I have been rooting against ND since 1972 and won’t be stopping anytime soon! My favorite game was when ND was beating USC 24-0 and then lost 55-24. Yes!! Of course, the David Gordon kick was a source of joy too! When was it when they came out in special uniforms and BC throttled them? 2003???

and, of course, their fans are utter arrogant fools, starting with the imposter (non ND grad who is a supreme ND wannabe) who runs the OneFoot Down Blog.

Am I clear??

As an alum with an Irish Studies minor, I had always heard that BC was #2….behind University of Houston, which had a massive endowment specifically for the program. I cannot find any supporting evidence of this, however.

But, according to IrishCentral.com, we rank #2 behind our sisters in South Bend.

by the way, if any other school in the country called themselves the “fighting” anything..the NCAA would be up in arms. Pretty much every other school that has that in their nicknames has or has been forced to change it..ND wears it like the red badge of courage. Hell, Hofstra wasn’t even fighting, they were just the “Flying Dutchmen” and they changed that. ND should have lived in Southie in the 70s and 80s, would have given them a better understanding of fighting Irish. I’m Irish, I find it offensive! And to Eagleosprey’s point..not a lot of Irish in the South Bend area anyway, a lot of Polish anyway..so no Irish..it’s the Arsh.

the mascot is a slur too

the “irish” mascot and logo are negative sterotypes of Irish as small, ugly and pugnacious and with a little jack-ass beard. This indeed was prevalent stereotype in Boston back inthe day — the Irish we portray as little monkeys who fought. irish link

So why is ND allowed to keep an ethnic slur as their mascot?

Can you imagine this kind of slur being allowed for any other ethnic group???

why the fighting irish --a term lifted rigth out of New England

University of Notre Dame
Religious Bulletin
March 16, 1953
__________

Why the "Fighting Irish"?

Many people wonder (or worry) about Notre Dame and that word, Irish. To us, it doesn’t mean race exclusively; nor is it just another nickname. The fact is, it keeps alive the memory of a long, uphill fight for recognition against a spirit that was not always generous, nor even fair-minded. The Irish, as known at Notre Dame, has an authentic history and a meaning deeper even than race.

Notre Dame began athletic relations chiefly with local colleges founded by various denominations. Press reports would refer to the schools as the "Baptists" or the "Methodists," and the like. For Notre Dame it was the "Catholics," or the "Irish." But the players were never all of Irish ancestry; nor were they all Catholics.

The usage was not original, but a continuing custom from earlier Colonial times. The bulk of the first Catholic immigrants were Irish — so that Catholics and Irish were identical in the public mind. It is sad to recall now, but few of the original states were without laws against them. Advertisements for ‘help wanted’ commonly carried the restriction: "No Catholics. No Irish." The Puritans were the first to cry: "Stop the Irish!"

When the religious origin of other colleges lost its significance, the emphasis shifted to conventional names, and to their school colors. But history is recorded remembrance in our blessed heritage here at Notre Dame. Fighting Irish! It’s more than a name; more than a people. It is the Faith!

In narrow, little New England, it began as a slur — a term of opprobrium. But we took it up and made of it a badge of honor — a symbol of fidelity and courage to everyone who suffers from discrimination; to everyone who has an uphill fight for the elemental decencies, and the basic Christian principles woven into the texture of our nation. Preserving this tradition, and this meaning of Irish at Notre Dame does honor to everyone of us. It explains why Lewinski belongs here; why Alessandrini is the Irish leader; why Schmaltz belongs here; why Bertrand, and Moreau, Van Dyke, and Larson feel at home here as much as do Leahy and O’Brien

While Brian Kelly may have some good points.....

What they are, I have yet to notice any. Aside from recruiting. Even that area is suspect since the Notre Dame brand is a powerful magnet to many cerebral type-A football players, in little need of powerful recruitment tools.

Kelly is a maniacal, out-of-control, narcissist, that rants and raves at the first sign of distress on the field. Screaming at a young QB on the sidelines, who is about to go into the game and take the field is a great way to prepare for the next set of downs folks! As soon as he went bi-polar on QB’s I knew it was all over…..

Coaches are always TALKING about keeping cool under pressure. How will “So and so react in that split second when the pocket is collapsing…..” Kelly is a complete fraud.

Then they go out and create a Quarterback controversy. Just for the hell of it, because as in Rich Rodriguez’s case…..People might instead have looked at him sooner.

So Brian Kelly just stole a page out of RichRod’s “Playbook”, so it seems. Except Kelly forgot to load up his schedule with a bunch of cupcakes. Now his players hate his guts. He still has his temper, and next year, the rest of the Nation is going to hand him his Butt-cheeks on a platter, ala FSU, just because they can.

Lou Holts was doing a full throttle victory lap at HALF TIME!

Lou Holtz was looking for a 12 story building to jump out of after only a 4th quarter crushing smackdown by a bunch of freshmen!

Lou Holtz was blaming the Coach. For once he was right. Even though he sounded like he couldn’t find his denture cream…..
