Woman's Basketball - Assessment of Crawley Hire

I know very few give a hoot about this sport but it really should be one where we should have reasonable success. The ACC is a major player in this sport and our team just lost to BU and Hampton. They have an overall losing record without the excuses of the men's program as they are not dominated by freshman. What is going on with Crawley? Very mediocre recruiting by ACC standards and her teams constantly turn over the ball. Other than hockey and soccer - we seem to suck (i.e., not mildly but hugely) at everything these days.

This Eagles team is now 5-12 so far and 0-4 in the ACC with losses to Hampton, Hartford and BU. Its a relatively young team but not freshman dominated. This is piss poor.

Agreed, but how much of this is on Crawley and how much is on DeFilippo? He certainly didn’t hire a losing coach in Inglese.

I don’t believe he hired Inglese but I may be wrong. Inglese wasn’t perfect but she was solid and competent. Certainly not worthy of being let go based upon W-L record. Crawley, on paper, did not appear to be an unreasonable hire based upon her limited years at Ohio where she had success. But her BC teams have been very sloppy and the players she has recruited (while respectable) just don’t measure up to the level of competition in the ACC. I think Crawley’s main issue is recruiting. I’m beginning to think BC is a very tough sell for every coach other than hockey.

Sorry, that was a typo. Meant “He certainly didn’t fire a losing coach in Inglese.”

I don’t believe this has to be the case, but I think the current department makes it so.

I remember walking around the campus one beautiful spring day last year and thinking if you couldn’t sell this place you couldn’t sell breast implants in Texas. You guys could do an interesting piece by interviewing some retired coaches (known for their recruiting prowess) as to the essential ingredients of a great recruiting operation – particularly for a program that does not have a huge tradition.

Beginning to look like the Crawley hire will be a huge bust. I don’t follow women’s hoops all that closely, but I’ve heard second-hand that Crawley isn’t doing so great on the recruiting trail (sounds familiar).

There’s really no way to spin Inglese’s record vs. Crawley, and this season looks like it’s shaping up to be a disaster (0-5 in ACC and not even into the toughest part of the schedule).

Final Game Loss to Miami By 46 Points - Yes - FORTY SIX

Final record (7-22, 2-14). And there weren’t too many close losses. Young team of mostly Sophs and Freshmen – but still. This is PATHETIC. But, of course, does anybody realistically expect that anything will be done about it?

Something Not Right Here

I realize that the quality of some of the recruits slacked off a little last year. But – if you take a minute and look at the overall quality and backgrounds of the team – they should have been a lot better than this. Then remember how many players disappeared from the team in the first year. She had to assemble practically a whole new team. You would hope that DeFilippo does random 360 reviews of his head coaches in the normal course from players and assistant coaches individually under confidentiality assurances. If only a couple say she is terrible, no issue – but if a large proportion of the team describe significant problems with the coach – there probably is a problem. I just get the sense that this team is going through the motions and has given up on themselves and their coach.

Fukowi — do you think Crawley deserves another year, Spaz style? Or is this just not a good fit?

Could Anybody Be This Stupid And Get Paid $1.5MM Per Year?

“Chestnut Hill, MA – Boston College head women’s basketball coach Sylvia Crawley has received a two-year contract extension that will keep her in her current position through the 2014-15 season, according to an announcement made by Boston College Director of Athletics Gene DeFilippo.

“We are very fortunate to have Sylvia Crawley leading our women’s basketball program,” Director of Athletics Gene DeFilippo said. “She is an outstanding recruiter and teacher and has done an outstanding job in her first two seasons. The future of our program is very bright, and this contract extension is very much deserved.”

Please tell me you are joking. I can’t take much more of this.

I just don’t get how a coach that wins 20+ games in seven of her last eight seasons abruptly “resigns” and then resurfaces at URI a year later. Did we ever get the full story here?

Aside: replacing a coach that won 20+ games in seven of her last eight seasons with a coach that had won 20 games once in a mid-major conference probably isn’t the best decision.

by Brian Favat on Mar 1, 2012 10:24 PM EST reply actions

I did not know that Cathy Inglese wound up at URI. I will never understand why she was dismissed. She was extremely competent and professional and a credit to BC. Her dismissal was absurd.

Women’s basketball is an important program that if very successful would garner a lot of attention in Boston. BC is a very attractive school for women – look at the enrollment figures. We are in a premier conference. Almost every school that has had major success – starts to have similar success in its men’s program. Look at UConn, Baylor, Tennessee, ND, etc. It is inexcusable to have allowed our program to sink to such depths.
