UMass Football Coaching Search Rife With Boston College Connections
UMass football, who will be transitioning to Division I-A and the MAC next season (#MACtion!), continues its coaching search. On AD John McCutcheon's wish list are plenty of coaches with BC connections.
Of course, it just wouldn't seem right if a Mark Blaudschun Globe coaching search article didn't lead with current Cleveland Browns QB coach / former UMass head coach / ever the BC coaching bridesmaid Mark Whipple mentioned as a coaching candidate. But it's the coaches with actual BC connections that are much more interesting.
"McCutcheon also is expected to talk to Boston College defensive coordinator Bill McGovern in the next few days.
Other possible candidates include former BC assistant coach Jack Bicknell Jr., currently the New York Giants assistant offensive line coach; former BC quarterback Mike Kruczek, who spent six seasons as head coach at Central Florida; and University of Pittsburgh assistant head coach Calvin Magee."
The big name on that list is Boston College's DC Bill McGovern. Should McGovern get the nod, Blauds not so subtly suggested earlier this week that Spaz may take over the added responsibilities of defensive coordinator.
I suppose I wouldn't be opposed to this if it meant Spaz ceded more control of the offense to the OC (Brock? Rogers?). Focus on your strengths and give your offensive coordinator more autonomy to operate. There's nowhere to go but up for the offense, right?

Spaz will still control offense
He goes over and approves game plans before games start

Is there any question?
I mean, we have had three different OCs and have been subjected to the same impotent offense.

No, there is no question . . .
. . . but, this part of your analysis is — as a result — a nonsequitor

With Spaz up for another year
I’m trying to stay positive. It’s hard to argue Spaz isn’t a damn fine DC, given BC’s history under him as DC. Brock, if he was really involved as OC, showed some promise (getting more TE in the mix toward season’s end, using Bordner etc). Would rather McGovern stay and Bicknell Jr get the job at Mass so he can eventually return home to BC, post GDF.
how about
he relinquishes complete control of the offense and goes back to being just the d coordinator while we start a national head coaching search
Don't worry i got the inside scoop from our AD
its when you scare away any possibilities for an upgrade at head coach by making a condition of their hiring that they keep the current underachieving staff
Defined
Cronyism is partiality to long-standing friends, especially by appointing them to positions of authority, regardless of their qualifications. Hence, cronyism is contrary in practice and principle to meritocracy.
Cronyism exists when the appointer and the beneficiary are in social contact; often, the appointer is inadequate to hold his or her own job or position of authority, and for this reason the appointer appoints individuals who will not try to weaken him or her, or express views contrary to those of the appointer. Politically, “cronyism” is derogatorily used.
