Saint Louis 62, Boston College 51: Eagles Come Up Short In 1st Round Of 76 Classic
[Ed. - promoted]
The Eagles definitely fought in this game, and for awhile, they were hanging with the older Billikens. However, in the end, it was not to be, and Saint Louis eventually prevailed 62-51. Matt Humphrey and Ryan Anderson led the way for the eagles with 12 points, and Dennis Clifford and KC Caudill chipped in 10 and 8 points, respectively. Patrick Heckmann clearly was bothered by his ankle injury, and he only posted 1 point.
Just like the UMass game, the Eagles came out guns-a-blazing to start the game, and Eddie Odio had a dunk that pushed the Eagles lead to 8 at 13-5 earlier in the game. However, Saint Louis came right back, and took the lead back at 22-20 on a Kwamain Mitchell 3 pointer. The score ended up at 29-23 Saint Louis at the half.
The Eagles came out and struggled to start the 2nd half, going down 45-30 on a Brian Conklin free throw. The game swung back and forth after that, until Matt Humphrey made a 3 to cut the Saint Louis lead to 7 at 54-47. However, it was not to be, as BC couldn't cut into the lead anymore than that.
Some thoughts on the game:
--Clifford was aggressive in the 1st half, but was tentative in the 2nd, however, he played well.
--The starting lineup of Ryan Anderson, Danny Rubin, KC Caudill, Matt Humphrey, and Gabe Moton was interesting. I guess Donahue as trying to shake things up.
--Defense and Rebounding were much better today for the Eagles.
This should be a positive learning experience for this team going into the next game against either UC Riverside or Villanova (most likely UC Riverside). Villanova would certainly be a challenge, but UC Riverside is terrible, so BC should take that game if they played each other.
Go Eagles!
UPDATE: Villanova beat UC Riverside today 71-46, so the Eagles will play UC Riverside tomorrow at 5 on either ESPN2 or ESPNU.

This was the first game I was able to watch on TV and uninterrupted (minus the obligatory trips to the kitchen to taste-test).
A couple thoughts:
1) We are way to careless with the ball. Know we are young, but we need to really emphasize ball security. Although some of Jordan Daniels passes were just unexpected by his teammates..think he is a natural distributor.
2) Seems like we were playing much tougher on defense than the HC and UMass debacles…Still need a lot of work.
3) That kid Kwamain Mitchelll just killed us all day. Seems like Majerus has a good one in that PG.
4) Dennis Clifford…be aggressive on the offensive end! He’s going to be a good one, just have to get him to start thinking to attack! Too many times he caught the ball in a good spot and was thinking pass first.
This season could be a long one, but I’m not jumping ship.
Clifford
He is going to probably have the biggest growing pains out of all the frosh. You are totally right Hoya, he has the moves to be solid under the hoop. But he needs to get more confidence, it looks like he is scared to move when he gets the ball. Clifford’s progression will be one of the more interesting stories of this season.
