Boston College's Kuechly A Butkus Award Finalist

Fresh off a Chuck Bednarik Award snub, Boston College's Luke Kuechly did receive some good news today.

Kuechly has been named one of six finalists for the Butkus Award, given to the nation's top linebacker. Kuechly is the only ACC player still in the 2011 Butkus Award mix, a list that includes three linebackers from the SEC, one from the Big Ten and one from Notre Dame.

Here's the complete list of finalists:

-- Nebraska's Lavonte David
-- Alabama's Don'ta Hightower
-- Alabama's Courtney Upshaw
-- Georgia's Jarvis Jones
-- Boston College's Luke Kuechly
-- Notre Dame's Manti Te'o

Last season, Kuechly was edged out by Texas A&M's Von Miller for the Butkus. Luke is the only of the six finalists to make the Butkus Award finalist list for the second consecutive season. Interestingly, Notre Dame's Manti Te'o won the Butkus Award in high school in 2008.

The 27th Butkus Award winner will be announced on December 7. Best of luck to #40.

If he doesn’t win, I will lose my mind.

I lost my mind when...

Herzlich lost out on the Butkus Award in 2008 to Aaron Curry from Wake Forest even though Herz was the ACC Defensive Player of the Year that year!

Still don’t understand how someone could be the best defensive player in his conference, but then lose out on the best linebacker award to someone from his own conference. At least Curry has sucked it up in the NFL…

Yeah, we haven’t had the best track record with this whole Butkus Award thing the last few seasons.

Prepare To Lose Your Mind

Rarely do players win individual awards on bad football teams. Not to mention that almost nobody has actually seen Kuechly play this season. I’d bet anything that Hightower is going to win based on the fact that the guy is a wrecking ball and has done it for a national title contending team that hasn’t played the bulk of its season on ESPN3 or NESN.

Actually, I think Kuechly has a pretty good shot at winning the Butkus, and here's why:

1. By all accounts, Kuechly won the individual matchup for attention with Te’o this weekend (on NBC, not ESPN3).
2. Hightower will likely split some of the vote with Upshaw. The fact that two Bama backers are on the finalist list is big for #40
3. Kuechly was really close to winning last year and has arguably had a better season this year

Agree players on bad teams rarely win these awards, but I think there has been enough buzz around Kuechly this year that he can win this despite BC’s awful record.
