Around SBN: Bill Stewart Dead From Apparent Heart Attack

Being a college athlete in Boston has always been a tough gig. It’s a pro sports town, and the recent success of the professional teams has only made it harder for the city’s major programs to attract much attention. Despite the fact that Boston College has sent scores of players to the NFL over the years, some of whom have even become stars (see Matt Ryan), the football program that plays on the edge of the city still struggles to fill its stands. While Alumni Stadium certainly provides a pleasant experience for the casual fan, it lacks the excitement and passion that you find surrounding many other top-tier college football experiences.

Stadium Journey, a new website that provides information on sports venues, reviews BC's own Alumni Stadium. What do you think of the review? Fair?

Generally Fair

My biggest disagreement is that it speaks too uniformly about games. For the big games, Alumni can get pretty loud (it’s design helps keep in sound). It really just matters if the crowd is into it.

Agreed

The atmosphere can be pretty good for Florida State, Virginia Tech, Clemson and Miami games too.

He must have gone for the Rhode Island or Northeastern game.

BC Stadium

I was fortunate to visit the BC campus for the first day of Spring practice. I went inside the stadium. I have also been inside Tennesse’s stadium. There is just something missing. The entire athletic department appears to be complacent and arrogant. Flutie brought enthusiasm. I got the feeling that they would like to “put Flutie’s statue in the basement”.

Pro sports town

My main disagreement is he talks up the pro sports town argument. Boston isn’t a pro sports town, it’s a college town. There are just a LOT of different colleges. I think they say that 1/5 of the city’s population is college students.

Just because you go to college in Boston doesn’t mean you are going to show up for a BC football game. College football just isn’t a part of other Boston school’s experience.

From the pics on the site, it looks like he went to the UVA game. Of all the years to come to the Heights and of all the games to attend, that was probably one of the worst. That being said, something is definitely wrong with BC’s athletic department…and it’s not new.

I tend to think that one of the most damning moments for our AD was in ‘07 when BC was not able to sellout Alumni when we were undefeated and #2 in the country with FSU coming to town for a night game on ESPN!! If we couldn’t sell that game out, then I just shake my head and say, GDF has done well for us, but we need new blood.

I was at that game. The weather was terrible, but still no excuse. I was really disappointed we didn’t fill the stands for that one.

FSU rain rain rain

It was horrible weather that day. Night game and it was torrential rain all day long. Not fan friendly weather at all.

Also in 2007, GDF overplayed his hand (Matt Ryan, ND game) and implemented donor based seating

I’ve given plenty to the school, but when I wanted season tickets on first level (as opposed to upper level) they told to fork up $1,000 per seat on top of ticket price and that my substantial donation to academic mission of BC meant zero. Zero!. I passed.. That type of treatment turned off a lot of fans.

Shall we also discuss bad tailgating rules. Etc

The weather was bad for Florida State, but ...

The weather was MUCH worse 10 days earlier for Boston College-Virginia Tech, and the Hokies still managed to pack in 66,233 on a Thursday night and sell out Lane Stadium.

If you want to talk DBS, tailgating rules or soft home schedules, that’s cool, but I don’t think weather should be an excuse.

But it is

I don’t think weather should be an excuse.

Of course, it is a factor, particularly for alum ( we’ve gone soft!)
