Analyzing EA Sports NCAA '11 Boston College Roster: Offense [UPDATED]

Brian: EA Sports recently released their NCAA ’11 rosters online (registration required), which gives us a glimpse into the player ratings for each team. While you can’t exactly marry a BC roster of unnamed players to next year’s actual roster one for one, it does give a sense of what the game makers think of BC’s chances in 2010.

Today we’ll take a look at the offense. Let’s start with the QB rankings. Here is EA’s list of QBs on the Boston College roster:

No.

Player

Pos

H

W

Year

Ovr

15 Dave Shinskie QB 6'4" 216 So. 84
16 Michael Marscovetra QB 6'4" 192 So. 84
7 Chase Rettig (?) QB 6'4" 205 Fr. 65
12 Joshua Bordner (?) QB 6'4" 185 Fr. 65

You can throw out Codi Boek due to graduation and I guess you can assume that Mike Marscovetra (16) is one of the other two sophomores on the roster. Are you surprised with Shinskie’s 83 rating and the fact that his next closest competitor is a 79?

Star-divide

Jeff: I think the 83 sounds pretty fair for Shinskie, and if the 79 is Marscovetra I would say that that's probably not too far off either. Those aren't great stats, but there are just OK.

Brian: Let's take a look at the Eagles running game:

No.

Player

Ovr

2 Montel Harris HB 5'10" 200 Jr. 89
21 Tahj Kimble (?) HB 5'10" 213 Fr. 81
29 Rolandan Finch HB 5'10" 201 So. 79
36 James McCluskey FB 6'2" 251 Sr. 77
13 Codi Boek FB 6'3" 221 Sr. 71
35 Andre Williams (?) HB 5'11" 202 Fr. 65

And the Eagles receiving corps:

No.

Player

Pos

W

Ovr

10 Colin Larmond Jr. WR 6'3" 200 Jr. 87
81 Chris Pantale TE 6'6" 244 So. 84
14 Billy Flutie WR 6'2" 184 Jr. 82
17 Clyde Lee WR 5'11" 170 Fr. 82
30 Donte Elliott WR 6'0" 197 So. 81
88 Jordon McMichael TE 6'5" 242 Sr. 79
5 Ryan Lindsey WR 5'8" 168 Sr. 77
1 Shakim Phillips (?) WR 6'2" 191 Fr. 77
40 Jarrett Darmstatter (?) TE 6'5" 241 Fr. 66
82 Bobby Swigert (?) WR 6'1" 175 Fr. 65

EA hits the nail on the head with the BC rushing game. It will continue to be the Montel Harris show until someone (newcomer Tahj Kimble? Rolandan Finch?) emerges as a legit backup. In the receiving corps, we lose the top three receivers to graduation, and their #1 WR on the spring depth chart is the team’s lowest rated wide receiver (Billy Flutie). Surely Flutie deserved a higher overall ranking than a 65, no?

Jeff: Would you hate me if I said that I think that rating is probably right on the money? But I would say Lars Anderson might be a little underrated at a 73.

Brian: Finally, the offensive line will clearly be a strength this season, with our highest ranked offensive player being senior Anthony Castonzo a 92.

77 Emmett Cleary LG 6'7" 297 So. 83
78 Thomas Claiborne RG 6'3" 325 Sr. 83
60 Bryan Davis C 6'2" 285 Fr. 78

68 Seth Betancourt (?) LT 6'6" 285 Fr. 65
59 Andy Gallik (?) RG 6'3" 290 Fr. 63

Overall, how well would you say EA did at capturing the player ratings for the 2010 Eagles offense?

Jeff: Considering what it is and the fact that they can't use names and do everything exact, I would say they did pretty darn good. Are there plenty of missing players and things that don't make perfect sense? Sure. But overall it is very good and the key players are there with good ratings ... even though I was hoping for Montel Harris getting a 90+.

Unfortunately, we're not Florida or Alabama and EA was probably not as concerned with 100% accurately representing the Eagles compared to some other teams. Hopefully our team outperforms their rankings on the field. We'll find out in only a few months now.

Thoughts? Any updates? I took the EA Sports Team Builder template for BC and tried to marry it up to the roster and the spring depth chart, but if I missed anyone, let us know in the comments section.

How

Do they decide that Boek, who has never taken a snap for BC is virtually just as good as Shinskie? Castonzi should be higher as should Harris and Gunnel. Who are alot better than players below them in the depth chart IMO.

Mea culpa

I was originally directed to the 2010 Team Builder so the rankings from the original post were off. I’ve updated the offensive rankings, but the commentary no longer fit the actual rankings.

We’ll try and do better with the defense.

They were initially fed the wrong player data. The charts are now accurate.

Where

Is Castonzo? And btw Kimble will be a beast I can’t believe EA detected that.

by Jiftastic on Jun 23, 2010 5:40 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

I’m also shocked Castonzo isn’t on EA’s roster, but he isn’t on the two-deep spring roster. That’s probably why he didn’t make the cut?

Agreed

Should be much more distance between Harris and Larmond Jr. If only because one of our QBs has to throw the ball to Larmond. They can just hand it off to Montel.
