Request For Scouting Report: Rich Gunnell

Tomahawk44 of the SB Nation blog Arrowhead Pride is looking for the inside scoop on Rich Gunnell. Leave your thoughts on Gunnell below and whether you think he can make the KC roster.

As you all know the Chiefs signed ex-Boston College WR Rich Gunnell. Ive been going around all our draft pick and undrafted free agents blogs and trying to get an insiders view on our new Chiefs. Can you tell us what Rich Gunnell brings and if you think he will be able to compete enough to make it on the roster?

All I really know about him is his incident with Clausen and that alone made me like the guy.

Thanks for any information guys!

Summary of Rich Gunnell

Pros:
Good but not great Hands
Physical
Good Route Runner
Decent blocker
Smart Player/Leader
Made bad qbs look half decent

Cons:
Questionable Speed- but USC game made us think differently
Undersized
Not a deep threat

He should be able to find a place on a roster given KC’s minimal depth at WR, most BC fans think he was underrated and should have been a late round draft pick.

Our QB Dave Shinskie connected with Gunnell on a ~20 yard pass and then he managed to outrun three members of the Trojan secondary, taking it to the house.

Gunnell had a monster game in the Emerald Bowl. 6 catches, 130 yards … breaking the school’s all-time receiving yards record (2,659 yards).

he seems like a slot guy would that be correct?

I think we would be alright having Bowe,Chambers,McCluster and Gunnell. Wade is gone and Lawrence and Lance Long didnt show much last year. If Gunnell works his butt off he has a real chance at making this roster.

Gunnell Speed

One of those members was 4.3 whatever Taylor Mays.

But we all know what happens in shorts is more important than in pads.

He will be an NFL player

I don’t think it’s completely homer of me as I normally don’t feel as confident about BC players. Something about Gunnell just makes me think he’ll make it. He’s put up great numbers with a great QB and good number with terrible QBs so he isn’t a product of Matt Ryan. Kansas City should feel good about having him on the team.

I agree

I think he’s a really intelligent kid with a good football IQ, he didn’t have the greatest system to play in for a WR either. He had a great QB with Matty Ryan, but not a spread offense, pass happy system.

Rich is great

He becomes a QBs best friend quickly, as he isn’t afraid to get hit, will catch almost everything that is thrown at him, he is super clutch and just knows how to get first downs.

I feel he should have been drafted, but the size and speed combination apparently raised too many questions.

We know one thing, that Matt Ryan loved this kid because of his ability to make plays in the clutch and just be a team player. I really hope he gets a fair shake because I really think he can be a decent slot receiver in the NFL.

He'll be in the NFL

great slot guy, really reminds me of Troy Brown (might remind weiss as well) doesn’t drop much that he gets his hands on. He’s a fiery competitor and if he wants it enough he’ll make the roster. If he could have had Matt Ryan for longer and was able to put up numbers he’d be a 4-5th round pick so great value. He had to deal with some rough quarterbacking junior and senior year.
