Boston College March Madness: What If Tournament 2000-2010

Sure, there will be no postseason for Boston College basketball. Doesn't mean we can't have our own fun with brackets this week ...

Brought to you by a website called whatifsports.com, I wanted to see how BC basketball's last ten years' worth of teams stacked up against one another. The site has college hoops data going back to 2000-2001, and uses statistics, records and personnel to simulate the results and statistics of hypothetical matchups like the 2003-04 Boston College squad that went 24-10 vs. the 2000-01 squad that finished the season 27-5.

We know this year's team was bad, but just how bad were they in comparison to the past ten years' teams?

Here are the seedings for our BC basketball cage match of the decade, based largely on season performance:

Star-divide

10. 2007-2008 Eagles (14-17) - Tyrese Rice (PG), Rakim Sanders (SG), Tyler Roche (SF), Shamari Spears (PF), Tyrelle Blair (C)

9. 2009-2010 Eagles (16-17) - Biko Paris (PG), Rakim Sanders (SG), Corey Raji (SF), Joe Trapani (PF), Josh Southern (C)

8. 2001-2002 Eagles (17-12) - Troy Bell (PG), Kenny Walls (SG), Ryan Sidney (SF), Uka Agbai (PF), Nate Doornekamp (C)

7. 2006-2007 Eagles (21-12) - Tyrese Rice (PG), Sean Marshall (SG), Jared Dudley (SF), John Oates (PF), Sean Williams (C)

6. 2008-2009 Eagles (22-12) - Tyrese Rice (PG), Rakim Sanders (SG), Corey Raji (SF), Joe Trapani (PF), Josh Southern (C)

5. 2002-2003 Eagles (19-11) - Troy Bell (PG), Louis Hinnant (SG), Ryan Sidney (SF), Nate Doornekamp (PF), Craig Smith (C)

4. 2003-2004 Eagles (24-10) - Louis Hinnant (PG), Sean Marshall (SG), Jared Dudley (SF), Uka Agbai (PF), Craig Smith (C)

3. 2005-2006 Eagles (28-8) - Louis Hinnant (PG), Sean Marshall (SG), Jared Dudley (SF), Craig Smith (PF), John Oates (C)

2. 2000-2001 Eagles (27-5) - Troy Bell (PG), Kenny Walls (SG), Kenny Harley (SF), Xavier Singletary (PF), Uka Agbai (C)

1. 2004-2005 Eagles (25-5) - Louis Hinnant (PG), Sean Marshall (SG), Jared Dudley (SF), Craig Smith (PF), Nate Doornekamp (C)

Here's how the single-elimination bracket shapes up, with two opening round games between the 7 vs. 10 and the 8 vs. 9 seeds:

Opening Round

(7) 2006-07 Eagles vs. (10) 2007-08 Eagles
(8) 2001-02 Eagles vs. (9) 2009-10 Eagles

Quarterfinals

(1) 2004-05 Eagles vs. (8) / (9) Winner
(2) 2000-01 Eagles vs. (7) / (10) Winner
(3) 2005-06 Eagles vs. (6) 2008-09 Eagles
(4) 2003-04 Eagles vs. (5) 2002-03 Eagles

Let the games begin. Tournament results will be posted tomorrow.

do they factor in benches, or just starting lineups

i only ask this question because the sixth and 7th men for skinner have proved to be very important over the past 10 years.

Where is the 2000-2001 team without Sidney?

Jermaine Watson in 2004.

Benches are factored in.

The 2006-07 Team

With Sean Williams is a huge sleeper in this bracket. That team was 13-4 (5-0) including a couple typical Al WTF losses. Seeing Southern attempting to guard Sean Williams would be comical.

I agree.

But they have a tough draw in the quarterfinals against the 2000-01 Big East champs.

Can they win 4 games in 4 days?
