2010 Bowl Projections: Boston College's Bowl Destination Down To ... San Francisco? [UPDATED]

With UConn winning the a share of the Big East title and heading to the BCS (in all likelihood, the Fiesta Bowl), the Big East and Notre Dame's bowl destinations seem to be all but set. UConn is likely headed west to play Oklahoma. West Virginia appears headed to the Champs Sports Bowl, while Notre Dame will head to the Sun Bowl.

BC's bowl fate was largely tied to the Big East bowl selections. Specifically, our fate depended on whether Notre Dame would get an invite to the Champs Sports Bowl (against likely N.C. State) or the Sun Bowl (likely Miami). All indications are that Notre Dame will be invited to the Sun Bowl to play Miami.

This leaves basically one option for the Eagles -- a January 9 data against the Nevada Wolf Pack, who officially accepted an invite to the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl on Saturday night.

Here's what the ACC bowl picture currently looks like. We'll get an official word likely at some point later today:

BowlACCOpponent
Orange Virginia Tech Hokies (11-2) Stanford Cardinal (11-1)
Peach Florida St. Seminoles (9-4) Mississippi St. Bulldogs (8-4)
Champs Sports N.C. State Wolfpack (8-4) West Virginia Mountaineers (9-3)
Sun Miami Hurricanes (7-5) Notre Dame Fighting Irish (7-5)
Meineke Car Care Clemson Tigers (6-6) South Florida Bulls (7-5)
Music City North Carolina Tar Heels (7-5) Tennessee Volunteers (6-6)
Independence Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (6-6) Air Force Falcons (8-4)
Military Maryland Terrapins (8-4) East Carolina Pirates (6-6)
Kraft Fight Hunger Boston College Eagles (7-5) Nevada Wolf Pack (12-1)

They will

Worst team in history of BCS. Shutout by Louisville, lost to Rutgers, lost by two touchdowns to Temple and only managed 10 points on a terrible, terrible Michigan defense.

More than their unimpressive resume

They simply looked really bad yesterday. They entirely played not to lose (not a bad strategy against a walk-on true frosh QB) and still almost did anyway. Their QB is awful and Jordan Todman didn’t impress me all that much. They will get rolled by Oklahoma.

Money on the line

What was up with the announcers saying that lots of money was on the line for UConn during the USF-UConn game? Doesn’t the Big East share the bowl revenue equally? Someone had to win the Big East and earn the BCS bowl payout, but then isn’t it split evenly?

If anything, UConn will probably lose money (a lot of money) on bowl ticket guarantees.

Mixed feelings

Suqs we r playing Nevada, not BSU. Really makes it way less attractive TV wise.

Just not a very sexy game any more. Nevada. Groan.

But this is better than playing ECU in the Dom. Davis bowl. Maryland got hosed. Gee, too bad Turtles, join the club

Maryland definitely got screwed, but really they only finished one game better than us (beating us head-to-head and N.C. State) and lost to the few good teams they played in ACC play. They had a pretty easy ACC schedule, beating the four worst teams in the conference and N.C. State, when TOB laid another giant egg.

W – Duke, Virginia, Wake Forest, N.C. State, BC
L – Florida State, Clemson, Miami

I'm excited about Nevada

Wolf Pack are coming off best season in program history, beat Cal pretty easily and 3 Mountain West opponents (the conference they are jumping to in 2 years). Took down Boise State.

I’m excited to see the Pistol offense go up against BC’s defense.

CBS

Has temple, not BC, playing Nevada.

And has BC playing ……. Nobody!!!!

NBC too....

NBC has Temple playing Nevada, and BC playing in the Military Bowl. But it is pretty clear that the NBC “projecters” do not know jack, as they have Clemson going to Boise’s hideous blue field to play the Humanitarian Bowl.

Haha, why would CBS take us off the board entirely, and replace us with Temple?! That makes no sense, and is pretty laughable. Oh well, playing Nevada in SF is better than ECU in DC. The Sun Bowl was always our pie in the sky, but this isn’t too bad (relatively for what we’re used to)

sad thing is

Had we beat ND and Maryland (two teams we could have beat), we would have been 9-3 (5-3), not 7-5 (4-4).

But we still would have wound up at the bottom of the ACC heap. Just look at Maryland, at 8-4 (5-3), they are forced down to ACC #8 spot. Interesting, for the Southern bowls, there is also not much interest in Miami, another ACC team that does not travel well.

So the reality is that unless we go 6-2 in ACC play or win the ACCCG, we will sink to the bottom of the bowl bubble sort every year

With Notre Dame to the Sun Bowl, they become less concerned about the ACC team traveling well (Miami).

what ever happened to us in the military bowl?? it seems like that possibility just disappeared without any real explanation

by BCPhilly13 on Dec 5, 2010 11:52 AM EST reply actions

Explanation

Maryland was hoping for a spot in either the Champs Sports Bowl (ACC no. 3) or the Sun Bowl (ACC no. 4), wanting to play in a better bowl than the hometown Military Bowl (ACC no. 8).

  • Champs is going to take West Virginia, which if Maryland was here, would be a regular season rematch. So N.C. State seems likely to fall here.
  • Sun Bowl has been higher on Miami than Maryland, and since Champs is taking West Virginia, Notre Dame will get scooped up here for Catholics vs. Convicts.
  • Meineke Car Care has already claimed Clemson.
  • Music City seems to lean North Carolina.
  • Independence bowl favors a more local team (Georgia Tech) to pair against Air Force.

That leaves the Military Bowl left to choose between BC and Maryland. I highly doubt they would go with BC over the local team.
