It seemed slow watching from home, but the people who were there paint a story of a good atmosphere. Still wish I could have hauled ass up from NY to be there.

Soaring to Glory: A slightly relevant BC blog

It wasn’t anything electrifying, but it was fun and it set a cool precedent that I hope we can build on in the future.

One thing that really caught my attention is that they did a much better job with the sound system then they do for the typical Conte event – no real audio trouble, and you could understand everybody who spoke into the mic, even Coach York.

Things did occasionally seem a little disorganized – for example, Costas accidentally introduced the Men’s Basketball team too early – but the show went on just fine and everyone I talked to afterward said that they had a good time.

Some highlights:

-The Zamboni guy driving out of a tunnel full of dry ice to kick things off. He got more applause than anyone but Flutie and Coach York.
-The bizarre dance-off between the women’s hoops team and some sort of Korean dance club.
-Watching Flutie compete in the 3-point shootout. He came in last, but put up a valiant effort.
-Steve Donahue declaring the he came here primarily “Because BC can win a national championship.”

Unfortunately I can’t report on the dunk contest, since I left after the hockey trick-shot game to catch the end of the Celtics-Heat season opener, but I’d imagine that was cool, too.

Following along on Twitter ...

My favorite part was someone said Steve Donahue said “BC can win a national championship” (but he left out “in hockey” at the end of his statement).

Great Event

Everyone is forgetting (or intentionally omitting for one reason or another) the most ridiculous part of the evening. After Donahue said a few words, a few bball team members starting rapping “Ice Ice Baby” while Dallas Ellmore laid down a beat. After half a verse, smoke came billowing out of one of the tunnels and out walks… Vanilla Ice. He proceeded to rap the whole song with the crowd rapping and singing along, toward the end even replacing “Ice Ice Baby” with “Ice Jam Baby”.

Vanilla Ice hung around for the rest of the event, too. After Flutie did his 3-point effort, Vanilla practically leapt across the scorer’s table to give him a high-five. There’s an image I didn’t ever expect to have.
