Boston College Opens As 21-Point Road Underdog Against Florida State

Following Boston College's 44-17 loss to N.C. State, you knew this week's spread versus Florida State was going to be high, but this high? The early line on this weekend's game?

BC +21

You have to go back a long, long way to find a game where the Eagles were more than a 20 point underdog. You have to go back 93 games, to be exact, to September 21, 2002. On that day, the Eagles went into their Big East opener at Miami as a 26 point underdog. They lost that game 38-6.

Here's a look at the biggest BC spreads going back to the 1985 season:

DateOpponentScoreLineResult ATS
11/17/1990 @ Miami L 12-42 +35.0 W
11/8/1997 @ Syracuse L 13-20 +27.0 W
9/28/1991 @ Penn State L 21-28 +27.0 W
9/21/2002 @ Miami L 6-38 +26.0 L
9/7/1991 Michigan L 13-35 +25.5 W
11/26/1999 @ Virginia Tech L 13-38 +25.0 W
11/9/1996 Notre Dame L 21-48 +23.0 L
9/21/1996 @ Michigan L 14-20 +22.5 W
11/23/1996 @ Miami L 26-43 +22.0 W
10/13/2001 @ Virginia Tech L 20-34 +21.0 W
10/16/2010 Florida State --- +21.0 ---
11/23/1991 Miami L 14-19 +20.5 W

Going back to 1985, BC is 9-2 ATS when a 20+ point underdog. They are also 0-11 straight up. The closest the Eagles have come to winning was in 1991, when BC lost to Miami 19-14.

The Eagles will look to snap an eight game losing streak ATS, a streak that goes back to last year's game against Central Michigan. BC is one of just three teams that is winless against the spread on the year. Wisconsin (0-5) and New Mexico State (0-5) are the others.

Also, gambling is bad.

Take FSU

Not that I condone gambling or anything.

BC can’t even get friggin first downs, let alone points. If the Noles want to run it up, they probably can.

I messed up this comment, but I think it’ll be 55-13.

In other words don’t bet on us.

55-13

Pretty close to my initial gut feeling yesterday while BC was getting smoked (though I think it was something more like 52-10, oh well, who cares).

Take FSU.

I watched both the BC/NCSU and FSU/Mia game. My thought is that we are going to get mashed

Are you saying the line is too high?

The only way BC doesn’t lose this game 60-3 is by the mercy of Jimbo Fisher. FSU can win this game by whatever score they want and Spaz will roll over and accept it.

Not exactly

I mean, I think BC is going to cover every week but the 8 straight losses ATS are disturbing. Those are also most likely 8 losses between Jeff and I in Pick 5.

I think if there was any week to snap that 8-game skid, this is the week.

Attendance

If nothing else, BC might have attendance on their side this week. With the way the Eagles have played, and FSU’s attendance issues, I don’t think this game will be very well attended.

Listed attendance for FSU’s game against Wake was 61,647, under 75 percent of Doak Campbell’s capacity.

But keep in mind it's

Parents’ Weekend. This will be my only game this year due to distance ( 6 hour drive for us)and the economy, but we will be there to visit with our son who’s a junior in Tallahassee.

In addition to being Parents’ Weekend, last week’s game made believers out of many fans and brought back a good deal of excitement to the program after a number of disappointing years.

21 just seems so high

almost like a line adjustment since we’ve obliterated the spreads 4 weeks in a row. Ya’lls record against the spread of late doesn’t hurt either (though I really am usually one to think it doesn’t actually matter). We gotta be on let down alert after the Miami game. Bunch of guys reading their own press clippings could lead to a closer game than is necessary.

21 is too high

Fisher has shown he will take games he’s not worried about losing (not that this is one) and use it to work on specific things like a great power pitcher reps his curveball in Spring Training even though the fastball could get out the AAA hitters.

This team will improve in '10... on its 16-16 conference record over the last 4 years.... after losing 20 games in the last 4 years... after having the 7th worst major-conference defense... after not even winning its own division in the ACC in the last 4.

21 is too high

I see a let down and FSU only wins by 10 or 14. We havde a young team and their heads will be huge after that Miami smack down.

No way, bet on FSU

Texas 5A high schools would cover this spread the way we’re playing.

BC's D is still good

The FSU O may only get 20 something points on it. But how many scores does your sorry O hand FSU? That is going to decide the margin of victory and whether you cover the spread.
