A Sweep, and the Eagles Advance

Congrats to Jerry York and the BC Eagles as they advance to the Hockey East semifinals with a 5-1 win over the Providence Friars. The Eagles were led by Ben Smith, Brian Gibbons and Nathan Gerbe, all three tallying a goal and an assist. BC scored early and often, jumping out to a 4-0 lead after 1 period. (Blogger note: I am slowly feeling better and better about my decision to buy Hockey East championship game tickets this coming Saturday night in Boston.)

Uncharacteristically, the Eagles were outshot 37-20 tonight. Providence's special teams struggled mightily (as they have for much of the second half of the season), going 0 for 8 on the man advantage tonight. John Muse stopped 36 of 37 shots to improve to 19-11-8 on the year. The game was again lightly attended, as only 2,493 were in attendance at Conte Forum.

The Eagles semifinal opponent is still in doubt, as both Boston University and Vermont failed to close out their quarterfinal series this weekend. BU lost to UMass-Lowell 4-1, while Northeastern pulled even with Vermont with a 2-1 overtime victory. New Hampshire closed out their quarterfinals with a decisive 7-2 victory over UMass. Since the Hockey East tournament reseeds for the semifinals, root for the UMass-Lowell River Hawks or the Northeastern Huskies to pull off the weekend upsets tomorrow so that the Eagles don't have to face UNH in the HE semifinals.

Unfortunately, basketball didn't fare as well in its season-ending blowout loss to Clemson. More analysis on the ACC quarterfinals loss when Jeff gets back from Charlotte on Monday.
